Conjugial Love

The New Church has a great deal to say about the sanctity and beauty of true married love, called Conjugial love. In this world many declare they have found their “soul mates”. These feelings may be based on superficial attraction or a recognition of a deeper compatibility.   Conjugial love is the marriage of soul mind and body. It is not yet a reality when two fall in love or first marry, but is a process that begins in this world and comes to its fullness in the next. The following quotes from Swedenborg’s theological Writings describe this love.

“Love belonging to the spirit, and to the body as a result of the spirit, is in the souls and minds of married partners, together with friendship and mutual trust.”

“Conjugial love has the quality of each wanting to be the other’s completely and reciprocally. When this is experienced they are in heavenly happiness.”

“The origin of conjugial love is from the marriage of what is good and what is true…”

“Into this love are gathered all joys and all delights from first to last.”

“The states produced by conjugial love are innocence, peace, tranquility, inmost friendship, complete trust, and a mutual desire of mind and heart to do the other every good; also as a result of these…the happiness of heaven.”

“They  who are in love truly conjugial look to the eternal in marriage.”

“The correspondence of this love is with the marriage of the Lord and the church. That is, as the Lord loves the church and desires that the church shall love Him, so husband and wife mutually love each other.”

Some find this love on earth, and all who truly desire it, will find it in the world to come. This is a love that any person, married or single, can strive for by looking to the Lord and rejecting things that are contrary to this ideal.
