Marriage and resurrection

The following teachings are frequently part of the New Church wedding ceremony.

“When married partners love each other tenderly, they think of eternity in regard to the marriage covenant, and not at all of its being terminated by death.”

“People who are in a state of truly conjugial love look to eternity in their marriage because eternity is inherent in this love.”

Along with this assurance, the minister may also speak of challenges that await the young couple on the journey ahead of them. He may remind them, that though they may feel their love is perfect and forever, this is just the beginning of learning about love.

These same teachings are often used at New Church resurrection services when a husband or wife leaves for the spiritual world.

“When married partners love each other tenderly, they think of eternity in regard to the marriage covenant, and not at all of its being terminated by death.”

“People who are in a state of truly conjugial love look to eternity in their marriage because eternity is inherent in this love.”

If they have been married for a long time, the spouse is very aware of how the marriage relationship has grown over the years and of their feelings about its continuation.

If they believe their married partner is the one they will be with forever they can be comforted by these two (and many other) teachings and know the relationship is not over.

“Those in true married love are not separated by the death of one.”

“When people pass from one life into the other, or from one world into the other, it is as if they passed from one place to another; and carry with them all things which they had in themselves as human beings. Therefore after death, which is only the death of earthly bodies, it cannot be said that people have lost anything that belonged to them as a person.”

The newlywed couple and the bereaved spouses are promised by the Lord that their efforts to be faithful loving husbands and wives will contribute to the happiness of their marriages in heaven.
